Childhood Obesity Facts and Tips

Researchers claim that childhood obesity has risen dramatically, with 1 in 5 kids today being either overweight or obese.
Unfortunately, a lot of these overweight kids are victims of a lack of balanced home prepared meals due to the busy lifestyles of parents, whom are probably not eating wisely themselves.
With the convenience of a fast food restaurant offering quick hunger fixes for a relatively small amount of money, it encourages kids and adults alike, to keep returning for their favorite Super Size meal and motivates the franchises to be more interested in steady profits rather then healthy nutritional fast food.
The poor are really in the grips of fast food eating, since you can fill up on belly, butt and thigh busting foods for under $5.00.
Becoming overweight or obese is a symptom of inactivity and poor eating habits and if not prevented, the child will grow up with all of the health, employment and social issues associated with obesity, so it is important that parents take steps now before the kids need to start dieting.
The chances of kids growing up with good eating habits and embracing exercise and physical activity as a way of life are not too good if the parents aren’t setting a good example with better eating and lifestyle choices themselves.
Obesity wasn’t an issue in past generations, if a child wasn’t helping with the many chores that needed to be done, they were out on the street or on the ball field playing fun cardiovascular, stamina type sports and games, but today most children find television and computer games a way of life.
50% of American families today don’t have a sit down meal together, allowing kids to make their own food choices, or they are given an allowance for a pizza or you guessed it fast food. Kids that have a parent at home have a better chance at the rewards of balanced meals.
Schools are at last playing an important role in offsetting the childhood obesity epidemic by providing students with more nutritional food choices. Results of the 2006 School Health Policies and Programs Study (SHPPS), released 10/19/07, reveals that schools are offering more fruits and vegetables, more whole grains and low fat dairy, and less high fat foods.
What the schools are providing now can give the parents some suggestions as what to offer at home with more fruits and vegetables, more whole grains and less high fat foods such as deep fried potatoes. Also, an average of about 85% of schools teach nutrition education.
Some Tips: Parents need to try and prepare more healthy food for the kids and themselves, such as cold whole grain cereals or hot oatmeal to start the day and fill up on lower calorie foods – salads for example with fruit for dessert. Prepare meals for the week on the weekend so when the kids reach for something to eat it will be of nutritional value, and don’t leave out protein. Cut way back on the five C’s, candy, cookies, cakes, cola and chips, unless they are made of whole grain products.
Kids are no different than adults when it comes to the biology of obesity, they need to cut more calories throughout the day than they take in. In order to maintain a healthy weight, get the kids involved in sports if possible, but if not try to get the kids in the habit of starting the day with some stretching and calisthenic type exercises, and if they can’t pry themselves away from the tube or computer, make them do ten minutes of chores or some exercises for ten minutes for every hour they sit.
It is the responsibility of the parents and school administrators to guide the kids towards healthy choices and enlighten them to the benefits of exercise and avoiding bad food choices so they can avoid being victims of obesity related diseases that include diabetes, heart disease, cancer and premature death.
Some Studies: Overweight children and adolescents are more likely to become obese as adults. One study found that approximately 80% of children who were overweight at aged 10-15 years were obese adults at age 25. [Source: Centers for Disease Control (CDC)]
Another study shows that a child’s weight may be influenced by the mother even before the child is actually born, and is more likely to become overweight at a very young age – 2 or 3 years old – if the mother was overweight or obese before she became pregnant. Conclusion: Before and after pregnancy the same formula applies; everyday physical activity + balanced diet = good health.

Lose Weight With Fat Burning Tips

Depending on what you do for a living, or possibly a physically active social life, can determine your weight. People with jobs that require lots of energy will tend to have a much better chance at maintaining a healthy weight. They are burning calories every working day. Pass by a busy construction site and you will have a hard time finding a fat person, unless he is the boss or equipment operator. Hard work makes your body demand fuel (food), so large lunches are the norm. Problem is, on the job site you usually don’t have the luxury of eating small portions throughout the day like you should.
It’s not easy to start a new exercise program and stick to it. There just doesn’t seem to be enough time to squeeze in a consistent exercise program for a lot of people. But, activity routines that exert energy will burn fat.
Wouldn’t it be nice if you knew you could add years to your life, inches off your waist and hips, decrease chances of heart disease, diabetes, some forms of cancer, and all you need to do is have some fun physical activity? Studies now show, that thirty minutes a day of physical activity can have a tremendous benefit to your weight control and health. Dr. James Levine led a study by the Mayo Clinic, and discovered that only thirty minutes of physical activity is all that is needed to give you benefits better than formal exercise.
If you could add physical activity into your daily routine, you will burn calories instead of putting on more pounds by continuing the bad habit of sitting way to much. Add a new healthy dimension, and get active. The Mayo Clinics study also went on to conclude that lean people burn 350 more calories than the obese persons on any given day, since they on average, sit 150 minutes less per day. Time to get up and get active.
By all means begin to make these activity routines a part of your everyday life from now on. These, combined with a healthy diet will get you on the road to looking, feeling, and being healthy. Dr. Levine also went on to say the NEAT doesn’t reflect a lack of motivation, but rather a brain chemical difference.
You don’t want to injure yourself, so be sure to do some warm-ups and some stretching before you begin. Try and start your morning with some routines and you’ll notice a boost of energy and an increase your metabolism during waking hours.
Fat Burning Activity Tips:
- Walk, walk, walk. Easiest and most effective activity to burn calories. Make it a habit to fast walk from one daily activity to another.
- Try walking around instead of sitting down when your on the phone. This is one of those activities where your burning fat and don’t even realize it.
- Nobody likes house cleaning, but this is one of those activities you can make fun by putting on some up beat music. Do this and not only will you lose weight but it won’t seem like such a chore.
- Everyone did jumping jacks in gym class and they are still part of every major professional sport warm-up. Try and do five or six sets of 20 a day.
- 30 years ago obesity was not a problem for most kids but with the fast food, TV, video games, and the internet, children are at a greater risk for obesity than ever before. If you have kids, get more involved together in some physical fun.
- If you are fortunate enough to have a lawn service, you might consider doing it yourself. Gardening and lawn work burn more calories than walking.
- If you have a dog and don’t get out for nice long walks, put him on a leash and go for a some short jogs instead. Less time and good for both of you.
Try and do about two hours a day of the activities that suit you best, and you could burn well over 1000 calories a day. A mile walk will burn 450 calories on 154 lb. man, just to give you an idea of the value of something as simple as walking.
Combining a good diet plan with your activity routines will give you an excellent chance at achieving your desired weight and health. If you are not on a diet plan that is working, there are plenty online created by nutritionists with proven results.
