Often termed to as the athletic yoga because of its discipline and interlinking system of Vinyasa, ashtanga yoga vinyasa is a group of particular asanas or postures that are done in a chronological order, beginning with the ten sun salutations followed by standing, seating and ending moves. When one is in the full expression of the asana, it held for a minimum of five breaths. Thoraco-diaphragmatic breathing is used in ashtanga. The lungs get rid of the air by pumping it out. Deep breathing enhances vitality thus the term vinyasa which means breathing along with movements.
The various poses are done so one may become aware of all the areas of the body, and as awareness is achieved the life force is directed to that area. Chronic diseases are said to be the result of lack of awareness. To spread the life force evenly inside the body one has to learn to breathe into all the areas of the body.
Breathing in ashtanga is done using the abdomen and the thorax. Increasing inhalation increases oxygen supply to the different body parts. These toxins build up in areas where oxygen is almost absent and these leads to chronic illnesses. Deep breathing can help the body get rid of toxins and return the body to its original state of health.
